Marja van Dieijen Prize PreCIS
After tallying both the audience score and the jury's score, the innovative project 'PreCIS, addressing medication prescribing cascades' won the Marja van Dieijen Award 2023, worth 25,000 euros.
Prescribing cascades occur when side effects of medications are not recognized but are instead seen as a new complaint. This results in unnecessary new medication prescriptions to treat the complaint. This phenomenon is largely unknown to patients, physicians, and pharmacists. This project focuses on recognizing and addressing side effects that cause prescribing cascades in healthcare and educating residents from the internal medicine and hospital pharmacy department.
What the jury appreciated: This is a beautiful and relevant innovation with a very clear explanation of the entire process. The plan is feasible and concrete. All our core tasks are well represented in this thorough study design.
